Guy Montag is a fireman. It is firemen who start fires rather than put out fires in his world, where television rules and literature is disappearing. He destroys the hidden houses in which the printed book is hidden, alongside the most illegal of commodities. He returns each day to his bland life and wife Mildred, who spends all day with her television family, never questioning the destruction his actions produce. In his search for answers, he meets an eccentric young neighbor named Clarisse, who introduces him to a past without fear and a present defined by books instead of mindless television chatter. The suicide attempt by Mildred and the sudden disappearance of Clarisse lead Montag to question everything that he has ever known in his life. The fireman starts hiding books in his home, and when his pilfering is discovered, he runs for his life.
